Ben Lehrer

I love the intellectual and personal aspects of climbing! Climbing hits the sweet spot for me between a competitive and completely laid back sport!

1. What do you do when you are not climbing? (Other hobbies/ sports)

I enjoy engineering and exploring the outdoors. Recently, I have been building a car from scratch out of wood with a few of my friends!

2. If you had to name one thing that gets you totally psyched about climbing, what would that be?

I love the intellectual and personal aspects of climbing! Climbing hits the sweet spot for me between a competitive and completely laid back sport and I enjoy the constant thought process of finding and simulating personal beta and solutions for challenging boulders and routes.

3. What is the most memorable climb/ boulder problem that you have ever completed or attempted?

My most memorable route is Reckless Abandon 5.12a at the Coliseum, New River Gorge. While it’s nowhere near my hardest send, it is amazingly aesthetic and contains such interesting and varied movement!

4. Do you have any ongoing projects that are just driving you crazy?

My personal outdoor season began a bit too late this year so I don’t have any long-standing projects, but my psych is definitely on Apollo Reed at the New River Gorge, Tuna Town at the Red River Gorge, and Confidence Over Cockiness at Haycock!

5. If you never discovered climbing, what would you be doing now?

If I had never discovered climbing, I’d probably be playing baseball and wrestling right now. Ever since I first discovered climbing, though, I was hooked and couldn’t do anything else!

6. Favorite music to send to!?

I usually send to the sounds of nature and my friends’ inspiration, but I love to train to a blend of alternative music, classic rock, and hip hop.

7. Climber that you most look up to?

Probably Royal Robbins because of his ambition to push the boundaries of climbing while being a good steward of the environment.

8. Top 3 Climbing locations?

I love The Red, The New, and Haycock/Gretna!

9. Your favorite BetaLabs product.

My favorite BetaLabs product is the Orange/Blue Buck-It. I really like how it is super water-resistant and can keep my chalk dry even when the ground is muddy or in a drizzle.

10. Why do you climb?

I love climbing because it is both mentally and physically challenging! Each discipline provides its own unique adventures and pushes me to be stronger and more motivated. Whether I’m trying to send a hard project, or training endurance on easy routes and boulders, I can always maintain my psych for the sport!
